Biochemistry bridges the gap between chemistry and biology, exploring the chemical and molecular processes that drive life. Biochemists investigate everything from molecular structures to macromolecular interactions and their roles in biological functions. This deep understanding fuels scientific and medical advancements across diverse fields, including pharmaceuticals, forensics, and nutrition for both humans and animals.

The Department of Biochemistry cultivates a dynamic environment where advanced research is integrated with developing future scientific leaders. From our beginnings in 1974 as an emerging voice in the university’s scientific landscape, we have strived to be a place where fundamental change is brought about in our students, ourselves, our environment and in the way we understand life at the molecular level. That spirit thrives today in our laboratories and classrooms, guided by values of integrity, respect, communication and accountability.

The Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST) is an internationally recognised research, training, and learning centre housed within the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at Stellenbosch University.

The Centre for Sustainability Transitions brings together research on the complex dynamics of sustainability transitions and transformations which is achieved through education and training, research, and engagements and which focuses on five key research themes – knowledge co-production, social-ecological resilience, transformative futures thinking, finance and resource flows, and political economy and development – that informs pressing national, continental, and global sustainability development challenges.

The Centre for Sustainability Transitions is a vibrant hub for leading scientists and students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds and fosters collaborations and partnerships with a variety of local and international universities. Our teaching and learning approach emphasises knowledge co-production, enabling the CST to bridge the gap between science, policy, and practice. By promoting collaboration, we foster an integrated and impactful approach to research and sustainable development.

The CST offers three postgraduate training programmes: Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Sustainable Development (NQF level 8), Master of Philosophy in Sustainable Development (NQF level 9) and PhD (NQF level 10).

Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies, as one of our core functions, supports three strategic priorities: broadening access to SU, sustaining the momentum of excellence, and enhancing our societal impact. At SU we not only strive for excellence in research but also towards social relevance in ever-changing contexts.

The environment of the Deputy Vice Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies (Research Development and Library and Information Service) place emphasis on the promotion of research outputs and innovation at SU to ensure that in the long run, it builds on its frontrunner-status. Furthermore, products and services are developed that can bring about economic and/or social improvement in the country. The University's knowledge base is strengthened by the expansion of existing and the creation of new multi-disciplinary research entities, while the establishment of strategic research partnerships help the SU to be financially sustainable. A valuable contribution is also made towards the realisation of SU's transformation and diversity goals through the development of a new generation of academics, growth in the number of postgraduate students and an increase in the number of international students that come to study at the SU.
