Prof Evert Kleynhans is a Professor in the Department of Military History of the Faculty of Military Science at Stellenbosch University. He obtained his PhD in Military Science (Military History) from Stellenbosch University in 2018. His broad research focuses on operational, naval, and intelligence history, as well as irregular warfare in Southern Africa. He delivers annual guest lectures in the Department of War Studies at the École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan and holds an honorary research position at the Centre for War and Diplomacy at Lancaster University. He is the former Editor-in-Chief of Scientia Militaria: South African Journal of Military Studies (2020-2024. His articles and chapters have been published in both international and national academic journals and books. He is the author of Hitler's Spies: Secret Agents and the Intelligence War in South Africa (Jonathan Ball Publishers, 2021), The Naval War in South African Waters, 1939-1945 (African Sun Media, 2022), and co-author of 20 Battles: Searching for a South African Way of War, 1913-2023 (Jonathan Ball Publishers, 2023). His most recent co-edited publication includes Home Front: South Africa and the Second World War (African Sun Media, 2024), The Second World War in East Africa, 1940-1941 (Brill, 2025), and The Handbook of African Defence and Armed Forces (Oxford University Press, 2025). His present research focuses on South African Escapers and Evaders in the Second World War, and he has a contract with Jonathan Ball Publishers to deliver a manuscript on this topic in late 2026. He received an NRF Y2 Rating in 2024, which is valid until the end of 2029.
