Prof Chegou heads the TB diagnostic (biomarker) research laboratory within the Division of Immunology, Department of Biomedical Sciences, based at SU’s Biomedical Research Institute. His work mainly focuses on the discovery of biomarkers for TB. He conducts research in both adults and children and in both the pulmonary and extrapulmonary forms of TB, often in collaboration with other partners within and outside Stellenbosch University. Other work that is ongoing in the ChegouLab makes use of animal models to understand the effects of the altered composition of the gut microbiota on TB disease development, and how polysaccharides that are produced by selected commensals influence both the susceptibility to TB and the response to treatment.
