OVERVIEW
I am a senior lecturer in the Department of Journalism at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Given my background as professional journalist, I have a specific interest in how newsworkers adapt to an everchanging media ecosystem. I believe that academic research with a foot or history in the profession can contribute a great deal to the body of knowledge about Journalism Studies. I have a specific interest in newswork cultures, journalistic role conceptualisation and newswork ethnography. As of 2022, I am the South African lead researcher on the comparative Worlds of Journalism Study project (https://worldsofjournalism.org/)
I also do research on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning – specifically as it relates to Journalism Education and Training. I thoroughly enjoy teaching and mentorship. Working with students to reach their full potential and seeing them achieve their goals later as part of the journalistic and academic community, are some of my greatest measures of success.
I have a very strong work ethic and believe I can add value to any team through commitment and determination. My strengths include the ability to take a holistic view to a situation and to look at challenges and solutions from different angles. With the combination of my skills as a journalist and my experience as an educator and researcher, I feel I am ideally suited to take on a mentorship role within a newsroom or educational setting.
