OVERVIEW

I am a subspecialist Urogynaecologist, minimally invasive and robotic surgeon, academic leader, and global surgery researcher based in the Division of Urogynaecology at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University. I have been affiliated with Tygerberg Academic Hospital and Stellenbosch University since 2017, where I currently serve as Head of the Urogynaecology Unit and Director of the MPhil Urogynaecology Fellowship Programme. My work integrates advanced pelvic floor surgery, robotic and minimally invasive surgery, surgical innovation, and global women’s health research.

Originally from Malawi, I completed my undergraduate medical training in 2007 before pursuing specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in South Africa. I obtained my MMed in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2016, as well as Fellowship of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of South Africa (FCOG SA) in 2016. I subsequently completed subspecialist training in Urogynaecology and was registered as a subspecialist in 2021. In 2025, I completed a PhD in Global Surgery through the University of Cape Town, focusing on obstetric fistula, maternal health systems, and geospatial access to care in Sub-Saharan Africa.

My academic and clinical work focuses on advanced pelvic floor reconstruction, laparoscopy, robotic surgery, and health systems research. My research interests include obstetric fistula, pelvic floor dysfunction, surgical outcomes, women’s health equity, digital health, artificial intelligence, and geographic information systems (GIS) in maternal and surgical care. My doctoral research explored preparedness to prevent and manage obstetric fistula in Malawi using the Three Delays Model, integrating clinical outcomes research, spatial analysis, and health systems evaluation.

I received international training in robotic surgery in Kiel, Germany, and currently serve as a national robotic surgery proctor using the Da Vinci Xi platform, supporting the development of robotic surgery programmes and surgeon training in South Africa. Since 2025, I have been involved in proctoring and training surgeons in robotic hysterectomy and sacrocolpopexy as part of the expansion of robotic gynaecological surgery in the country. My work also focuses on advancing minimally invasive surgery and surgical education across Africa through innovation, mentorship, and collaborative research.

In addition to my clinical work, I have been actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, fellowship supervision, curriculum development, and international academic collaboration for several years. I serve as a Senior Honorary Lecturer and contribute to specialist and subspecialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. I have presented my work at major international meetings including the International Urogynecological Association and contribute to initiatives aimed at improving access to quality surgical care for women in low- and middle-income settings.

My broader vision is centred on strengthening women’s health systems in Africa through innovation, surgical capacity building, research leadership, and equitable access to advanced care.
