OVERVIEW

I am Peter White, a Professor in the Faculty of Theology at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. My academic journey has been deeply rooted in Missiology, with a particular focus on African Pentecostalism, Religious Studies, and the intersection of Religion and Development in Africa.

My research is driven by a passion for understanding the complexities of African traditional religion and contemporary religious practices. I often explore the dynamics of Pentecostal churches, examining their mission strategies, leadership development, and the impact of televangelism. Additionally, I am fascinated by the role of social media in modern religious contexts, and my work in this area has provided new insights into how faith communities engage with technology.

At Stellenbosch University, I am dedicated to creating an inclusive and ecumenical learning environment. I strive to decolonize mission theology and practice, ensuring that religious studies are contextualized within the African experience. This approach not only enriches the academic discourse but also provides my students with a more nuanced understanding of theology.

Collaboration is at the heart of my work. I enjoy working with scholars from around the world to advance the fields of theology and missiology. My contributions aim to shape the understanding of religion’s role in societal development and highlight the transformative potential of faith communities.
