Prof. Alfonso Pecoraro is a distinguished cardiologist and specialist physician with a strong academic and clinical leadership profile. Currently serving as Head of the Division of Cardiology at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital, he is dedicated to advancing equitable access to high-quality cardiac care in South Africa. His professional journey is anchored in translational research, leadership in academic medicine, and the implementation of systems that improve clinical outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease. He is founding member and director of SUNHEART, a none profit centre of Stellenbosch University with a vision of improving access to cardiovascular care. Prof. Pecoraro has spearheaded several initiatives in clinical service delivery and outreach program, attracting over R50 million in external funding to support the development of public-sector cardiology services. He is also a co-chair of the STEMI South Africa research group and serves on multiple national and international professional bodies. Prof. Pecoraro actively supervises undergraduate and postgraduate researchers and mentors students at MBChB, MMed, MPhil, and PhD levels. His teaching and mentorship are central to training the next generation of physicians, cardiologists, and cardiovascular researchers in South Africa and his research is driven by a commitment to address South Africa's unique cardiovascular disease burden.
