OVERVIEW
I started my research career by determining the estrogenic activity of Cyclopia, commonly referred to as honeybush and used as a herbal tea beverage. This introduced me to the field of steroid receptor biology, specifically its molecular mechanisms of action. Steroid receptors are part of the broader nuclear receptor super-family. These are ligand-activated transcription factors responsible for many physiological processes, including human development, immunoregulatory functions, sexual development, etc. I have primarily focused on estrogen- and glucocorticoid receptor signalling throughout my research. Regarding the estrogen receptor (ER), I have primarily focused on the role of the inhibitory effects of plant extracts on ER-alpha signalling in ER+ breast cancer. Currently, my group is focussing on Aspalathus linearis and Aloe ferox.
