OVERVIEW
Personal Profile: I grew up in a home where academic excellence was emphasized. My mother is a medical doctor and my father is a theologian. I excelled at school and completed a BEng (Computer Engineering) cum laude at the University of Pretoria (UP). Moreover, I obtained my MEng (Computer Engineering) cum laude at UP. Thereafter, I worked at Telkom as a software engineer and helped develop an enterprise application that could configure multi-domain Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) services. I then took up a PhD studentship at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), while completing a PhD (Engineering) at UP. My PhD focused on using Machine Learning, statistics and remote sensing data to detect settlement expansion in South Africa. After obtaining my PhD I accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at Rhodes University (RU), where I worked on the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) project. More specifically, I worked on the calibration of radio interferometers and developed a reduction pipeline for the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA). During my time at Rhodes I also completed a summer internship at the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON) and I attended the HERA cohort program at the University of California (Berkeley). From Rhodes I moved on to Stellenbosch University (SU), where I was appointed as a lecturer in the Computer Science Division. I have now established a research group focusing on the application of machine learning to the fields of remote sensing and interferometry at SU.
