ProfSuzanne Grenfell
Associate Professor
Geography And Environmental Studies
OVERVIEW
Dr Suzanne Grenfell first developed a passion for wetlands and rivers under the tutelage of Prof Ellery. Since then, she has worked in a variety of environments ranging from sub-tropical floodplains of KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast, valley fill systems in South Africa’s semi-arid interior, coastal wetlands of Wales, and more recently, the wetlands of Cape Agulhas. Her research focuses on understanding how geomorphic processes lead to wetland formation, how those processes influence ecosystem service provision, and understanding the potential for wetlands to naturally recover following degradation. Her current research, a collaboration between SU, UWC and SANBI, focuses on the impact of climate change on floodplain ecosystem service provision.
Dr Grenfell currently teaches physical geography at third year and Honours level, and she also co-ordinates the BA Honours Geography and Environmental Studies postgraduate programme. She is a member of the Higher Degrees and Research Committee within FASS, and is chair of the academic steering panel for BIOGRIP (Stellenbosch Soil and Water Node). Externally, Dr Grenfell is a member of the South African Wetland Society and the South African Association for Geomorphology, and serves on the editorial board of the Springer journal 'Wetland Ecology and Management'.
