OVERVIEW
I am a Lecturer in the Department of Genetics at Stellenbosch University, specialising in plant biotechnology, genome editing, and new breeding technologies for crop improvement. My work focuses primarily on grapevine biotechnology, with particular emphasis on CRISPR/Cas-based approaches for improving disease resistance and drought tolerance, as well as the development of DNA-free genome editing methodologies for perennial crops.
Originally from Italy, I obtained my PhD in Biotechnology from the University of Insubria and have more than 15 years of international research experience across South Africa, Italy, and Canada. Throughout my career, I have worked on the genetic improvement of several crops, including grapevine, apple, wheat, potato, barley, and tomato, integrating tissue culture, transformation, functional genomics, and molecular biology approaches.
At Stellenbosch University, I lead and collaborate on multiple industry-linked research projects aimed at developing sustainable solutions for agriculture and viticulture. Outside academia, I enjoy spending time outdoors and have a strong appreciation for nature and animals, interests that closely align with my commitment to sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship.
