OVERVIEW
I am a lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry at Stellenbosch University, where I teach undergraduate courses in Biochemistry, including Immunology. My research group focuses on animal health, with a particular emphasis on diseases affecting South African ostriches and the factors influencing ostrich production. My work integrates molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, and bioinformatics to investigate pathogens such as Mycoplasma species—several of which my group has identified as novel to ostriches. By applying techniques such as PCR diagnostics, immunodiagnostics (ELISA), and DNA sequencing, I aim to enhance disease detection, control, and management within the ostrich industry. In addition, my research explores antimicrobial resistance in ostrich-production systems and examines how microbial contamination and the nutritional composition of eggs impact chick development and production efficiency. Overall, my research bridges fundamental molecular science and applied veterinary biochemistry to advance animal health and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
