OVERVIEW
I am an academic with expertise in educational policy studies, with a focus on inclusion and the equitable distribution of resources. I work in higher education administration in South Africa and the Netherlands (Stellenbosch University, Stellenbosch; IBTS, Amsterdam).
My PhD focused on Deliberative Democratic theory in relation to Private General and Further Education and Training. My research interests lie in the impact of legislation, policies and politics on the GFET education system in South Africa. In particular, with an interest on the impact of the histories of these areas on equal, quality education for all.
My latest published article, "Done first, done properly: The importance of Basic Education in Decolonization of Higher Education" focuses on the inattention to the curricula and the social environment of learners at basic education level and how this impacts learners as they move through the school system to higher education.
I am passionate about the South African Education system and the need for ALL learners in South Africa to have access to equal, quality education regardless of their geographic location and the social class they were born into.
My recent focus and speaking engagements have been to engage HE academia in understanding the basic education landscape and the challenges students from disadvantaged communities have faced before enrolling at HEIs. This includes sharing the importance of integration into HEIs that acknowledges the history and reality of the student, and how best to support the students during their first year of studies for improved university throughput.
