OVERVIEW
Dr. Itumeleng Moroenyane is a plant biologist with a focus on understanding the complex interactions between plants and their microbial communities, particularly in the context of evolutionary processes. His research explores how microbial communities contribute to plant resilience, particularly under abiotic stress such as drought and heat. Dr. Moroenyane’s work integrates the concept of the holobiont, where plants and their associated microbes form a single functional unit, and investigates how these interactions affect plant health and productivity. Through his studies, he aims to identify strategies that can be used to mitigate the impact of climate change on agricultural systems, improve crop yields, and promote sustainable agricultural practices. His research also encompasses the role of plant peptides in modulating stress responses, as well as the potential for microbial treatments to enhance crop resilience.
