RESEARCH INTERESTS
My primary field of research is reproduction physiology of animals, and my postgraduate research career has truly allowed me to learn about the reproduction of earthworms (in particular Eudrilus eugeniae), abalone (in particular Haliotis midae), fish (in particular tilapia species), avian species (in particular ostriches), and various mammalian species (including cattle, sheep, goat, African buffalo and more recently rhino).
Even though I can carry out research on both the female and male's contribution in a breeding population, I focus my research on the contribution of the male animal to the reproductive effort of a breeding population. A particular interest is in how resilient spermatozoa are to thermal stress, which include cold stress (associated with cryopreservation when spermatozoa are stored long-term in genome resource banks) and heat stress (as a result of an inability of the testes to regulate its temperature).
