OVERVIEW

Professor Resia Pretorius is a distinguished biomedical scientist and academic whose work focuses on uncovering molecular drivers of systemic inflammatory disease and translating these discoveries into diagnostic and therapeutic innovations. She currently serves as Vice-Dean for Research and Postgraduate Students at Stellenbosch University and is an Honorary Professor at the University of Liverpool.  Her research career spans more than two decades and has centered on the interaction between inflammation and blood physiology. She has demonstrated that circulating inflammatory molecules can induce pathological clotting, platelet hyperactivation, and erythrocyte damage, revealing new mechanisms underlying chronic disease pathology.  She is internationally recognized for discovering amyloidogenic fibrin(ogen) microclots and their role in disease, including Long COVID, and has developed patented diagnostic approaches based on these findings.  Her work has influenced global scientific discourse, been discussed in major journals and policy reports, and led to collaborations with leading institutions worldwide.
