OVERVIEW
I am a medical officer in the Division of Adult Infectious Diseases at Stellenbosch University, Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town. My research, teaching, and professional activities include clinical outpatient care and implementing clinical trials, cohort studies and programs for prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS & Tuberculosis at Tygerberg Hospital and surrounding clinics. Our clinic provides HIV and ART care to a large cohort of HIV patients living close to the facility and also serves as tertiary referral center for complicated cases involving HIV related comorbidities such TB, KS, hepatitis B/C co-infection and long-term complications such as virological failure and cardiovascular and neurological degeneration. I have a keen interest in Vertical Transmission Prevention of HIV and HIV/TB co-infection in pregnancy. My long-term career goal is optimizing clinical and Public Health outcomes in pregnant women living with HIV in Africa. This includes pharmacokinetic (PK) drug monitoring in pregnancy and adherence support systems in vulnerable populations. I was elected as investigator on the Women’s Health Collaborative Science Group (WHCSG) in 2017 and in 2019 as chair of the TB working group to further TB research in women.
I am a clinical investigator of FAMCRU CRS, associated with the US NIH AIDS Clinical Trial Group (ACTG) and International Maternal, Pediatric, Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials (IMPAACT) Network, for HIV/TB treatment and prevention studies in adults living with HIV in developing countries, including HIV related co-morbidities and malignancies. I am protocol team member of the P1026s IMPAACT study since 2014 and since 2018 I am lead investigator of the 1st line TB drug arms of the IMPAACT 2026 study, investigating the PK of antiretroviral and tuberculosis drugs in pregnancy and postpartum. My involvement in the P1026s study prompted me to plan doctoral studies on this topic commencing in 2024. I serve as the lead author of several planned manuscripts and forthcoming publications will be on the pharmacokinetics of isoniazid, rifampin, ethambutol and pyrazinamide, with and without concomitant ARV treatment, in pregnancy and postpartum. TB prevention in pregnancy will be studied in the UNITAID sponsored DOLPHIN Moms trial, evaluating safety and efficacy of 1HP vs. 3HP preventative treatment regimens where I am involved as protocol team member and site PI. I also serve as site principal investigator for ACTG since 2014 and have been involved in 14 ACTG protocols, including REPRIEVE. I am also site PI for pharmaceutical adult HIV treatment trials, such as GSK INSPIRING, SALSA and DYNAMIC and MSD ILLUMINATE.
