OVERVIEW
Dr Andries A. le Roux is a Lecturer in Agronomy at Stellenbosch University and currently serves as the SU-BFAP Chair in Precision Agriculture. His research focuses on climate drivers of crop production, precision agriculture, and data-driven agronomic decision-making in dryland cropping systems.
Dr Le Roux’s research integrates long-term field trials, controlled-environment experiments, and large on-farm precision datasets to understand how climate, spatial variability, and management practices influence crop performance. His PhD research examined how temperature, rainfall variability, and atmospheric CO₂ affect canola growth and yield in Mediterranean-type climates such as the Western Cape. Building on this work, his current research focuses on precision agriculture through Data-Intensive Farm Management (DIFM) and On-Farm Precision Experimentation platforms such as OneSoil, using large multi-year datasets to develop data-driven, climate-smart management strategies for farmers.
Through the SU-BFAP Chair, he collaborates closely with industry and producers to evaluate digital agriculture technologies, develop on-farm experimentation platforms, and translate agronomic data into practical decision-support tools for sustainable crop production systems.
